Watercolor impression of ships petroglyphs on a large rock – Bornholm, Denmark

Painting and text by Frits Ahlefeldt

Researching the coastal trail around Bornholm I came across these rock carvings – There is something special and a bit magical about art made up to 3500 years ago, back in the bronce age. Back then one or more artists carved these ships and figures onto a large granite rock on the small island of Bornholm. The place ( Madsebakke, Allinge, Denmark)  is considered one of the largest collections of ancient rock carvings in Scandinavia, I have walked up to study these paintings several times. Sitting beside them trying to imagine and get a bit closer to the artists who made them. Maybe in a world very different from ours, or maybe not so different at all, at least maybe not in their storytelling, fears and hopes in life
