Out of confusion

Walking around in the dark forest with a drawn timeline on my mind

The idea of a storyline grid

Text and drawing by Frits Ahlefeldt

I was still hiking in the forest, and didn’t use a headlamp, preferred my eyes to get use to the dark and as I stood there, I saw the contours of my storyline grid idea more and more clearly – an idea for an reversed drawn storyline, through my posts

I had tried a lot of different ways to sketch up the logbook and sketchbook notes I am posting here and on Instagram.com/FritsAhlefeldt , but really wanted to be able to connect them

A few days ago it dawned on me that if I started from the back end of my sketchbook, I could mimic the reversed way that social media like Instagram adds new posts to the timeline.

If I sketched the stories in reverse I would have a line through my grid, as a trail, the storyline could connect all the drawn stories into one long line, drawn like a trail.

Would it work?

I decided to stop at the next shelter for the day and make a fire, there would be a lot of rain and I could sit in there and sketch on the idea

I used my GPS to locate the place of the shelter, but stood on an empty cleared place between some tall trees, under an almost full moon. Turned on the headlight on maximum, walked around.

There were no shelter and I really wanted to test the idea as soon as possible.

Took a quick decision and checked some timetables – I could be scanning drawings and working on the idea tomorrow in my studio…

Realizing my storyline grid idea just might work, but I needed to test it as soon as possible

I found the bus stop and took out my phone to make a quick video update from here:
