The bunk bed room

Night ferry to Bornholm trail

Sleeping across the Baltic Sea

Text and drawing by Frits Ahlefeldt

On the ferry I found the free bunk bed room, it wasn’t too crowded as far as I could see, but still it was for anyone not having the money for the cabins, so the crowd was one I could easily relate to.

I slept a couple of hours, on and off between ringing phones, snoring and coughing.

At around 03:00 I gave up and went into the empty cafeteria to write, it was still open in case anybody would want something, I sat in a corner and worked, not sure for how long.

But when I finally felt tired and headed back to the dorm bed room, the heavy air of the many sleeping people hit me. I navigated back to my bunk bed and put my hat over my head… I could sleep, I could sleep.

What felt like moments later a loudspeaker announced that the ferry would arrive soon… and we should all get up.

Stumbled out to the bathroom, brushed my teeth and put water in my face to wake up, before I went back to the now empty room, everybody had already left. I packed down my sleeping bag and headed for the exit.

I could need a coffee, sure there would be a bakery open somewhere in town, but I also had a bus to catch…
