Red-throated Loon

Dw00064 Red throated loon – Gavia stellata – Rødstrubet lom ) Watercolor research

The red-throated loon is a strong flyer, quick swimmer and good diver – The only one of the loons that can take off from land. And it is believed by locals to predict weather, depending on type of call and if flying inland or out to sea ( Scotland among other places )

Smallest loon in the world

With a length from 55 to 67 centimetres (22 to 26 in) in length, the red-throated loon is the smallest and lightest (weighing 1–2.7 kg (2.2–6.0 lb) loon around today.

The Red throated loon is migrating between its summer Arctic summer breeding places, mostly North of the N50 latitude, and then in winter migrating South. Both to America, Europe and Asia including Japan. ( one species of Red-throated loons – no subspecies)

The red-throated loon is the smallest loon in the world and it live in long lasting monogamous pairs – Loons can cover more than 1000km. in 24 hours, when migrating at speeds up to above 75 km/h. ((47 and 48 mph)

Global population declining ( ex. back more than 50% in Alaska 1974-1993 ) Global population estimate: half to 1.5 mio )
