In the Netherlands the eggs of the Northern lapwing was collected in the old days, and it was tradition to see who could find the first eggs.

But in the last fifty years the Northern lapwing has become much more endangered, and the birds are now absent or rare on much of their former range. Collecting the eggs are now illegal in all of the EU, and also very damaging for the last of the remaining Northern Lapwing population

The lapwing is a ground nesting bird, often in farmed fields and the intensive farming that are now widespread reduce the habitat of the Northern Lapwing even more
