Painting watercolor in freezing weather

It was cold that winter day, colder than the other days. I worked slowly painting the alder in front of me, adding watercolor to the paper. But it was too cold, so the water would just freeze to ice right there on the paper. I left the painting for a while, pouring hot tea from my thermos and enjoying the sun between the trees. wonder what to do. When I came back to my watercolor a bit later the water had dried up, but left the pattern of the ice crystals. Still not sure exactly how it happened. Here is the painting:
